ALPAMAYO CIRCUIT TREK

OVERVIEW

One of the finest long treks in the Cordillera Blanca, offering stunning views of the highest peaks of the tropics like Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Chacraraju, Huandoys, Taulliraju, and of course Alpamayo, voted 'the most beautiful mountain in the world,' along with access to remote valleys and lakes.

ITINERARY

Day 1. Huaraz – Vaqueria – Paria

Starting with a 6:00 a.m. pickup, we drive through the stunning Callejón de Huaylas, Llanganuco Valley, and Portachuelo Pass (4,785m) for panoramic photos. From Vaqueria, we hike for 5 hours on a gentle ascent to Paria Valley (3,890m)

Day 2. Paria – Alto de Pucaraju Pass – Huecrococha Lake

After a short walk along the valley, we ascend a steep rocky path to the top of Alto de Pucaraju Pass (4,640m). From the pass, we enjoy beautiful views of peaks such as Taulliraju, Chacraraju, Paria, and many others. We then descend through a lupin-covered hillside to our campsite at Laguna Huecrococha (4,000m). Total walking time: 7–8 hours.

Day 3. Huecrococha Lake – Tupatupa Pass – Jancapampa

We ascend towards Paso Tupatupa (4,360m), with stunning views of the towering snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. Afterward, we begin a long descent to our campsite at the head of the Jancapampa Valley (3,700m). The hike takes approximately 7–8 hours. We’ll also have the chance to meet local people and children around the campsite

Day 4. Jancapampa – Yanajanca Pass – Huillca

We ascend gradually through a long valley for 3 hours before climbing steeply for another 2 hours to reach the rocky Paso Yanajanca (4,610m). From there, we descend to our campsite at Huillca (4,100m). Total hiking time: 7–8 hours.

Day 5. Huillca – Mesapata Pass – Moyobamba

We hike towards Paso Mesapata (4,460m), where we enjoy panoramic views of towering glacial peaks and a perfectly wild, remote paradise. There's a chance to spot condors soaring over the cliffs. We then descend into Moyobamba Valley to our next campsite, approaching the stunning beauty of Apu Alpamayo.

Day 6. Moyobamba – Cara Cara Pass – Jancarurish

We hike up to Caracara Pass (4,836m), where we are rewarded with breathtaking views of Alpamayo, a truly magnificent pyramid-like peak. After lunch, we hike to the moraine (two-hour roundtrip) offering stunning views of Alpamayo pyramid shape and the turquoise lake below. We camp in Jancarurish Valley at 4,206m, where we can enjoy dazzling views of Alpamayo as the sun sets and rises

Day 7. Jancarurish – Vientunan Pass – Osoruri

We trek through a flat valley for about 2 hours before ascending on a well-worn trail to Paso Vientunan (4,770m). After reaching the pass, we descend to our campsite at Osoruri (4,550m). Total walking time: 6–7 hours

Day 8. Osoruri – Cullicocha Pass – Huishcash

We begin with a gradual ascent to Paso Cullicocha (4,860m), where we enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Then, we descend to the beautiful Laguna Cullicocha (4,650m), offering breathtaking views of the majestic Nevados Santa Cruz. Finally, we continue our descent to our last campsite at Huishcash (4,350m). Total walking time: 6–7 hours.

Day 9. Huishcash – Hualcayan – Huaraz

We hike down a long zigzag trail to the village of Hualcayan (2,900m), then drive for 3 hours back to Huaraz. The descent takes around 4 hours.
